It was the story of two different halves of the month, the daytime highs were colder than average for the first half of August (although the daily lows were about average). The second half of the month was warm, putting the overall temperature at 0.6 degrees above average. However, this is still within the average range, albeit at the top end.
The month started out very wet with almost 30 mm in the first 2 days, this would end up being close to half of the total for the month. There was also a period of 17 days with less than 5 mm, but a few storms late in the month put the total just into the average range.
We are now at a total for the year of 805.4 mm, well above the average 594.3 mm. This means we have fallen a bit behind and now it is the third wettest first 8 months of year since records began in the area around 1915.
Summary for August 2013:
Maximum Temperature 30.4°C
Minimum Temperature 8.4°C
Average Daily High Temperature 25.0°C (Long term average 24.7°C)
Average Daily Low Temperature 13.6°C (Long term average 12.6°C)
Total Precipitation 63.6 mm (Long term average 87.0 mm)
(Long term averages based on 1971-2000 data for the Waterloo Wellington Airport)
