November 2013 Summary

A cold and dry month

For the first time since April, the overall temperature was below average, 1.2 degrees below to be exact, making it the coldest November since 1996.  The high temperature on the 24th was only -6.1°C, making it about 9 degrees colder than average for that day.  The last time we had a day that was that much below average was back in May.

With only 48.8 mm of precipitation in November, it was only the second time this year that we have had a drier than average month (the average is 82.3 mm).  The 3 cm of snow that fell was less than the 14 cm seen on average.

So here is the deal, we are still less than the record year for total precipitation, but we are also looking at some of the precipitation readings from this year that are a bit suspect.  Examining the data from other rain gauges in the area, the readings generally agree, however some of the bigger events may have some problems.  We hope to have a resolution of this situation by the end of the year.

Summary for November 2013:
Maximum Temperature 15.6°C
Minimum Temperature -13.6°C
Average Daily High Temperature 4.8°C (Long term average 5.9°C)
Average Daily Low Temperature -3.0°C (Long term average -1.6°C)
Total Precipitation 48.8 mm (Long term average 82.3 mm)

(Long term averages based on 1971-2000 data for the Waterloo Wellington Airport)

This past November had seen some of the coldest days in the year since February. The last time November actually felt this cold was back in 08, we had been spoiled by some balmy November these past four years...
