A good light show

Well the forecasts certainly delivered with respect to both the temperature and the humidity.

The temperature of 29.7°C combined with humidity that caused a humidex in the 40s combined with the unstable air to bring a couple of good light shows on Sunday.

"WEIRD BOOM SOUNDS ??

A number of people from locations around Waterloo, including myself, witnessed an odd sound last night during the storm. I was near Bridge & University. Every five seconds there was a faint "boom" sound, it kind of sounded like a muffled cannon going off. It was coming from north Waterloo and never changed direction of origin. It was separate from thunder, didn't sound like thunder and was on time every time. I was counting "1,2,3,4,5 *boom* 1,2,3,4,5 *boom*". etc etc. This was going on for 10-15 minutes, then just stopped. Any ideas? Did you or anyone else hear it??

other accounts:
"Yes, it sounded like someone hitting a metal garbage can with a bat as opposed to regular thunder."
"I did,, and I couldn't find anything on the internet to explain it. Can you ask your weather guy and let us know?"

I'm on Windjammer Way and experienced the same thing. The
pattern was something like a heartbeat: lub-dub… 2… 3… 4… lub-dub… 2… 3… 4… It lasted for ~20 minutes, was west of my location and passed north to south. I've experienced thunderstorms all over the world and have never heard anything like this before.

I just got a possible explanation........

"Hey Dan. I live near the st jacobs market and often hear these sounds. It was explained to me that if the farmers are expecting bad storms with possible hail they shoot chemicls into the air around the crops to destroy possible hail. That is what I've been told. My two cents worth!"

Do you guys know what time you heard these sounds?

Some time between 8:30-9:30

Apparently the sound was coming from a "Hail Gun". Here's the 411..

This would map with what I heard!

Sound quality is bad as the video cameras can't handle the loud noise, but you'll get the idea.

I will guess that the Martin's Apple Farm will be the only operation big enough to have a machine this expensive...

I heard the weird booms as well. Have no idea what they were... They seemed to come north of Northfield&Weber.

That noise has been happening during storms for years around here(Conestoga Mall). I got the noise on video from last night. I can post the link shortly.

I don't believe that this thing works. Seems to be more of jousting at windmills behaviour. Evidence would help!

One of the manufacturers claims this article proves the cannon is efficacious: The Effects of Shock Waves on a hailstone model
Journal of Applied Meteorology - volume 6 (Favreau and Goyer - 1966)

Unfortunately I can't find an electronic version of this paper.

Here is my video of the cannon noises. At :50 seconds into the video you can hear them really well until the end of the video at 1:30.

This video can be passed along to people who may know what the noise is.

Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmHCVAVh5HE

I heard that too! I live right near the Laurel Creek Conservation area, just southwest of it, and I heard it as I was coming into the house. It sounded a bit like big fireworks but I have no idea how someone would set off fireworks during a thunderstorm.

It is the Martin Fruit Farm hail cannon.

If it's Martin's Fruits, those are propane cannons which are used to scare off birds from feeding off the fruits in the trees ....the Niagara region is full of them too

I could hear the sounds from my back balcony all the way down in downtown Kitchener!

I was at the Farmer's Market today and I asked the people at Martin's about it. They were surprised that I had heard it in Kitchener.

The sounds were a hail cannon that prevents hail from forming in the atmosphere. There's an apple orchard nearby that loses the entire crop within minutes if they don't use it before/during storms.

Those were the strongest thunderstorms so far this year I was dealing with when firing out the watches and warnings. The lightning count was amazingly high. Was a very busy day indeed. Note that the maximum temperature at Waterloo Airport was 30.0 C, only the 2nd time this year the 30 degree mark was reached at that locale.

I have been hearing that for ages when the weather gets bad, thanks!
