Winter 2009/2010 poll

Spring officially starts next week so let's find out what everbody thought of the winter. The final numbers aren't in but obviously it was a warm and dry winter.

You can cast your vote on the UW weather station blog and just like the summer poll there are five categories (great, good, OK, bad, and washout).

I'm not really sure how this one is going to turn out.

It seems quite odd to claim:

"obviously it was a warm and dry winter."

Warm?

But the January graph summary says: "overall an average month for temperature."

And the February graph summary reads: "Apart from one or two days the rest of the month was entirely in the average range."

Likewise for the post-solstice period in December, the average temperature seems well within average.

I would say that compared to the last two winters which both "felt" very cold (regardless of the absolute data), this one did feel quite mild. Another year or two of this and it suddenly wont feel like such a big deal.

Well, of the last 5 January's (06 - 10 period), January 2010 was actually the second coldest (with the coldest one being last year's). And December was pretty much dead on average (temperature wise).

February and March seem to shape up being milder than average though, and obviously we didn't have nearly as much snow as the last two winters (which was what I think caused people to think that this winter was a lot warmer than average).

Although January of 2010 was the 2nd coldest of the last 5, it was still half a degree above the 1971-2000 average.

All of the months of the winter have been on the high side of the average range and with March being quite a bit above, this lead to my call of it being "obviously" warm.

Also, we never had an extended period of cold temperatures. To put numbers on it, the most we ever had were 2 days in a row that were more than 5 degrees below average.

This hasn't happened since the winter of 2001-2002.

I think not having those really cold stretches also makes it seem warmer.
