Microsoft Vista sidebar gadget

NOTE: The gadget has been tested by IT staff at UW and they have found it to work as advertised. They did not see any way that a game or virus could have been installed along with the gadget.

Here is a Microsoft Vista sidebar gadget sent in by Hao Zhang.

You can download the zip file containing the gadget here.

There is a readme file here, but all it says is to extract the files in the zip file to this directory:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets

As before I don't have a way to test it out myself so please leave comments on what you think of it and any suggestions to make it better.

I just installed and all I get is a rectangle with a picture of a horse in it on a yellow background.

Upon further investigation, there is nothing in the actual gadget directory at all. The .xml file just refers to some other website unrelated to weather at all.

Maybe this should be pulled until proven?

But, I could be just setting it up incorrectly.

Apart from extracting the files to the directory:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets

there isn't much else that could be wrong.

The person who left the first comment seemed to get it working.

Please keep me informed if you can or cannot get it working.

I just tried a reinstall with the same result. I did find the coding in the main.html file, but it just shows the same picture and nothing else.

Not sure what else to try.

The e-mail address for the person who developed the code is in the Readme file.

Would you able to e-mail him and try and figure out the problem?

I just downloaded the widget and it seems to be a game called BIGBANG--4 IN A ROW and I can't delete it from my computer.

I clicked on Solo, instead of Network or Email, and I was asked to pick a side (moon or sun?) to play the game. There is no red button in the upper left side of the screen to close or delete the screen, so I had to use the yellow button to put it on the dock and it won't slide into the trash. Help!

I would get it off the website ASAP! and I need advice on getting it off my computer. Thank you.

OK. I finally got the game deleted from my computer by force quitting it. It seems to be totally off the computer. That was scary!

GET THE WIDGET OFF THE WEBSITE!!!! thanks.

Hey guys.

This Hao Zhang, the creator of this gadget. I admit that this is probably nto as polished as could be.

I'm working on a new version written with GWT.

MLM, what are you talking about? My file contains some html files, some css, and a few images. The game that you are talking about is a game for the Mac. It's mind boggling how you are supposedly downloading this gadget for Windows Vista's sidebar while having a mac.

Hao,

Fantastic! I look forward to your new version.

They were unable to reproduce the problems seen by MLM.
