Quick temperature rise

On Thursday the temperature rose from -20.7°C at 9:30 am up to -16.5°C at 9:45 am.

That isn't an all-time record 15 minute temperature rise, but might end up being the largest one for 2009.

And as we might be having the last really cold day of the season this seemed like a good time to put this in.

A recent comment on the blog asked:

Which is worse? A colder but drier freeze (Winnipeg) or a less cold, but more humid freeze (Southern Ontario)?

Having grown up in Winnipeg and gone to school in 40 below 'dry' cold, then lived in Southern Ontario's humid cold for 40 years -- give me the dry cold and the sunshine hours over this dismal climate anytime!! Cold I can take. Snow and lack of sunshine hours I have a problem with -- even more so because we don;t keep any sunshine hours data anymore, do we??

dry cold is better. That dampness sucks the heat right out of you.

Having experienced both kinds of winters, I definitely prefer the dry cold. It somehow seems less cold.

Having grown up in Sudbury and then Mississauga, I'll take a dry cold over a humid, less cold one any day. I was never miserable in the cold until we moved to Mississauga. Humid cold bites.

I'm going to have to agree with the consensus here - I grew up in Southern Manitoba, and I much prefer the dry cold. The humid climate here means that the temperature goes right to your bones. If I'm outside for very long, I feel colder in -10C here than I do in -25C in Manitoba.

I also agree with John Wilson's sunshine comments - winter here can get very depressing compared to the bright, sunny winters in Manitoba.

It's not the cold, it's the humidity :)

I'm going to go ahead and agree; I also grew up in southern Manitoba (maybe that makes me biased), and much prefer the sunny, cold days that make life much more enjoyable.
